Phone Numbers Vs. Addresses

Not much. TextNow uses your existing data connection to send messages via the internet. What this mean's is that messages are sent more like email then a typical SMS message. Therefore, you don't need to worry whether you have a phone number or a TextNow address.

However, the difference between the two comes into play when we start talking about convenience. As I'm sure you understand, it is much simpler to give a phone number to a friend in comparison to a TextNow address, especially if your friend/family are using "dumb phones" that do not have email capabilities and this is why we have given our users the ability to gain a phone number. In addition, reliability is typically improved with the addition of a phone number to your account. We say this because phone carriers rarely block phone numbers, whereas TextNow address are sometimes blocked due to heavy traffic on the SMS servers.

Please also note: To gain voice features for your account you must obtain a TextNow phone number.

TextNow Phone Numbers are available to any TextNow customer at no cost. Please note that if you do decide to get a "free phone number" advertisements will be enabled on your account regardless if you have purchased a lifetime subscription or not. However, all TextNow users have the ability to buy out of their advertisement and become "ad-free". This can be done by accessing the shopping cart icon at the bottom of the TextNow app.
